ATHENS-HER-A-CRANES are in the forecast in Athens for Fat Tuesday.

That is when art students in a sculpture class at Athens State University will debut their creations in Downtown Athens for the annual Mardi Gras Street Fair. Art professor Gail Bergeron said the all-female class created crane costumes, one with at a least a five-foot wing span. The crane costume idea is to celebrate the whooping cranes that come to Wheeler Wildlife Refuge, Bergeron said.

Fat Tuesday is Feb. 28. Other artistic groups are joining the students to celebrate Mardi Gras. Athens Arts League will have free children’s art activities from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. at High Cotton Arts at 103 West Washington Street. Children can make Mardi Gras masks and decorate their wagons and bicycles for the Mardi Gras Street Fair. Athens Arts League, following a Mobile tradition, will give away mini-Moon Pies while supplies last.

The Mardi Gras Street Fair will start at 6:30 p.m. at the Athens State University Center for Lifelong Learning. Athens High School’s Jazz Band will have a Dixieland group performing as part of the festivities. The students, musicians and children with decorated wagons and bicycles will march on Marion and Washington streets.

Bergeron has been collecting Mardi Gras beads for students to toss to spectators. Anyone who would like to donate beads can take them to the Center for Lifelong Learning.

“If you cannot get to Mobile or New Orleans for Mardi Gras, join us in Downtown Athens for Mardi Gras-themed art crafts, music, to gather beads and to see the detailed work the HER-A-CRANES have incorporated into their crane costumes,” said Athens Arts League Public Relations Chair Holly Hollman.
