Bama Jane Cowan – Obituary

Funeral service for Bama Jane Cowan, 101, of Decatur will be Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Hartselle Heritage Funeral Home with Reverend Paul Stowe officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery in Decatur. Visitation will be from noon until service time at the funeral home.

Mrs. Cowan died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2017 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law who cared for her until her death. She was born Sept. 17, 1915 to Cynthia Dunreath Grant and Martin Van Buren Grant. She was a charter member of Cornerstone Baptist Church. She worked 30 years in the cafeteria at Walter Jackson Elementary School. After retirement, she worked two years at Grace Baptist School cafeteria and eight years at Cornerstone Christian School. She was an awesome cook, and probably the most organized and spotless housekeeper one would ever meet.

Mrs. Cowan was married to Buster C. Cowan, who is deceased. Survivors include her daughter, Jo Anne Cowan Spears and son-in-law, James Spears; three grandchildren, Pamela Jane Spears Free, Amanda Gail Spears Stowe and James Vann Spears; eight great-grandchildren and ten great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be great-grandsons, Josh Free, Brett Stowe, Matt Howell, Buddy Smith, Grant Free and Jonathan Millsaps.

The family would like to thank Hospice of the Valley for their wonderful care and amazing help to Jo Anne and James Spears, her caregivers. Hartselle Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family.
