Rutha Pierce Howell – Obituary

Rutha Pierce Howell, 86, passed away Wednesday, December 21, 2016, at the North Mississippi Medical Center. She was born May 24, 1930, to Prentiss Pierce and Trudie Harden Pierce. She was a graduate of the IAHS Class of 1949 and the IJC Class of 1951. In 1953, she became employed as a bookkeeper for the Itawamba County Times and worked until her retirement in 1992. She continued to work part time at Sprint Print in Tupelo until June 2016. She was a member of Fulton United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher in the children’s department for several years and a MYF leader along with her husband. She served as a Cub Scout Den Mother and assisted with the Brownie Scouts. An avid cook who enjoyed gardening and fishing, she was a loving mother, sister, grandmother, and friend and was known as Mammaw Ruth to so many of her grandchildren’s friends.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 24, at the Fulton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Phillip Box officiating. Rubye Del Harden will deliver the eulogy. Burial will be in Itawamba Memorial Gardens. McNeece-Morris Funeral Home of Fulton is entrusted with arrangements.

Survivors include her son, Bill (Ginger) Howell of Fulton; her daughter, Connie (Barry) Thrasher of Mantachie; three grandchildren, Brad (Jessica) Howell, Holli (Brandon) White, and Kristen (Richard) Owens; four great-grandchildren, Pierce Howell, Lanie White, Nash Howell, and Shaw Howell; three sisters, Ruby Wadlington and Rayoma Williams, both of Memphis, TN, and Robbie Limer of Woodstock, GA; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Howell, in November 1999; her parents; and one brother, John Pierce.

Pallbearers will be Brad Howell, Brandon White, Richard Owens, Gary Ricci, Steven Staub, and Stacy Russell. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Charlie Mae’s Sunday School Class.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, December 23, and from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at Fulton United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fulton United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 907, Fulton, MS 38843.
