Cuban History and the Endangered Archives Program
Thursday, January 5, 5:30 pm
Florence-Lauderdale Public Library
Early in 2016, doctoral student John Harris traveled to Cuba as part of the British Library and Vanderbilt University’s Endangered Archive Project. The purpose of this project is to digitize birth, death, and baptismal records from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in order to make them available to the public for the furtherance of historical research.

Since the first phase of the project was completed in August, however, many changes have taken place, including the death of Fidel Castro. The future of US-Cuban relations is as uncertain as it has ever been. In light of these recent events, John will be presenting a brief history of Cuba, including its past of sugar and slavery. More importantly, however, is the history of US-Cuban relations. For all the animosity, the two countries affected each other profoundly in the twentieth century, especially the era before the Cuban Revolution in 1959. In this context, preserving decaying records and the precious information they contain is more important than ever.

John Harris graduated from UNA with a Masters in History, and is currently a doctoral student at the University of Texas at Arlington focusing on the British North Atlantic, the Caribbean, and Cartography. He received various awards from UNA, UTA, and Phi Alpha Theta for his research on the Machiavellianism of Henry VII.
