Margaret Nix Chappell – Obituary

margaretMargaret Nix Chappell, age not to be mentioned lest the family be forever cursed, passed away peacefully Friday. Mrs. Chappell graduated from Woodlawn High School in 1937 where she was voted “Wittiest Girl” all four years. She worked as an executive secretary for Liberty National in Birmingham and was instrumental in the correspondence between the U.S. and France in getting the statue of “Lady Liberty” atop the Liberty National building.

She met Billy Frank Chappell on a blind date, marrying him three months later. They were happily married for 46 years before he passed away in 1983. While in Birmingham, she and Billy attended Avondale Methodist Church. Upon moving to Huntsville in 1966, Mrs. Chappell served as a homemaker until 1978 when she began working at the Madison County Board of Registrars. She enjoyed membership in Oak Bowery, Monte Sano and First United Methodist Church. She was a life long Alabama fan and never missed watching a game.

Her quick wit and Southern charm will long be remembered by her many friends and loving family. She is survived by her sons, Bill (Sharon) and Mike (Sarah) and grandsons John Michael, Christopher and Spencer Chappell; and niece, Pat Dailey (AJ) of Mesquite, TX.

Visitation will be Monday, November 28 from 6:00- 8:00 pm with a funeral service Tuesday, November 29 at 11:00 am at Laughlin Service Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Huntsville High School Theater Booster Club c/o Scott Smith 1301 Forbes Drive, Huntsville, AL 35802.
