Anthony A. Di Cerbo, 90, of Huntsville died Sunday, August 28 in Huntsville Hospital. Born at home in Lyndhurst, New Jersey, Tony was a graduate of Newark (NJ) College of Engineering and the University of Alabama, Huntsville. He and his beloved wife moved to Huntsville in 1974 where he worked at Redstone Arsenal until his retirement. Tony traveled the world in the Merchant Marine during World War II and served in the United States Army during the Korean War.
Son of the late Cecelia (Norris) and Anthony Di Cerbo, Tony was preceded in death by his wife Kaiho (Haapala) Di Cerbo in 2005, his sister Elizabeth Horent, and his brothers Vincent and Joseph.
He is survived by his niece, Christine Vitalis and her husband, Maynard, of Medford, Oregon; brother-in-law, Warren Souza of Ashford, Oregon; and his cousin, Stephanie Sumpman of Sussex, New Jersey. He will be greatly missed by his extended family and many friends in Finland and Huntsville, where he and his late wife were active in the Huntsville Music Study Club and supported the Voice and Piano department at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
Tony and Kaiho’s story is truly an international love affair. They were introduced by Warren and his late wife, Greta when Kaiho came from Finland to visit her sister. After a long distance courtship, Tony mailed an engagement ring to Finland and they were married there in 1967. When they moved to Huntsville, they became active members of St Mark’s Church and Kaiho continued to teach piano and voice, bestowing on her students her love and enthusiasm for music.
Tony was a caring and generous man who loved life, crossword puzzles, sports of all kinds and jazz, opera, and classical music.
A service in celebration of Tony’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 10, at St Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church at 200 Longwood Drive SE. A reception and remembrance will be held at the church following burial at Maple Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St Jude’s Children’s Hospital, St Mark’s Church or a charity of your choice.
