ATHENS-Police Chief Floyd Johnson released a statement on a robbery call from Region’s Security which proved to be a call for help:

“Today about 11:30 the police department received a call of a robbery in progress call from Region’s Security. Officers were dispatched to the Region’s Bank at 1101 HWY 72 East.

Dispatchers with our department were told a elderly man had walked into the bank and told the teller “this is a hold up.” The man then told the teller to keep the money and call the police. He then went and set down and waited on officers to arrive.

When officers arrived the man told officers he needed to go to the mental hospital and he thought he had to do something in order to get help.

Officers called an ambulance and he was transported to Athens Limestone Hospital for evaluation.

At this time we have not charged anyone in this case. Also I don’t have any information about his treatment of any an evaluation. “
