25623276876_104c7bbdd2_o-500x325MONTGOMERY—Governor Robert Bentley on Wednesday praised the final passage of HB534, which creates in statute the Governor’s Office on Minority Affairs (GOMA).

“Alabama has a unique history in promoting civil rights for minorities, and the courage and boldness of our citizens is a testament to the principles on which our state and country were founded,” Governor Robert Bentley said. “I commend the Legislature, especially Rep. John Knight and Sen. Rodger Smitherman who sponsored the legislation, for recognizing the importance of this office. The Office of Minority Affairs is a great resource for constituents, and creates a new opportunity to specifically address issues important to minorities and women. With the legislation passing today, Alabama becomes one of only a few states in the country to have a cabinet level position devoted to minority and women’s issues.  I will be proud to sign this bill into law.”

The office was created by Governor Bentley via executive order in March, and he appointed Mobile native Nichelle Williams Nix as the Director of GOMA.
