lee11MONROEVILLE-Beloved author of “To Kill A Mockingbird” Harper Lee has died.  She died at her home in Monroeville, Alabama on Friday, February 19, 2016.

City officials in Monroeville confirmed the death of the Pulitzer Prize winning writer.  Lee was 89 and became famous after penning “To Kill A Mockingbird” a novel about a small Southern town where a young girl experienced racial tension.  The book sold millions and was translated into dozens of languages.

Lee made headlines last year after announcing that a companion to her beloved novel would be coming out some 55 years after “To Kill a Mockingbird” which was first published in 1960. After the book, “Go Set a Watchman”,  published last summer, it set off debates about the author’s health and how involved she had been in the project.

Harper Lee’s family released a statement Friday, February 19:

“She (Lee) passed away in her sleep early this morning. Her passing was unexpected. She remained in good basic health until her passing.”

Harper Lee moved to New York in 1948 and her aspirations were to become an author.  She worked as a reservation clerk at Eastern Airlines for 8 years before the publication of “To Kill A Mockingbird”.

Lee’s family said that Lee requested a private funeral service and they intend to honor her wishes.
