SHEFFIELD – Helen Keller Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary has given a $3,000 donation to the Shoals Scholar Dollar Foundation. The donation was given as an effort to support the foundation, which strives to give all students in the Shoals area the opportunity to continue their education after high school. The check was presented to Dr. Randy Pettus, director of the foundation by Jane Barcomb, president of the Helen Keller Hospital Auxiliary and Doris Gallaher, Auxiliary Board Member.
The Shoals Scholar Dollar Foundation was initiated by the Rotary Club in 2009. It is a program that will provide two-year scholarships for high school seniors in Colbert and Lauderdale counties to attend college. The scholarship is an effort for shoals economic development in that it attempts to improve the work force by providing a post secondary education to all students. Dr. Randy Pettus stated, “This is going to be a salvation for so many kids…” The Shoals Scholar Dollar Foundation scholarship will begin in 2014. In order to receive the scholarship, students must have a 2.5 GPA, 95% attendance rate since 9th grade, no major discipline problems in school, and be a U.S. citizen. The scholarship will be offered at all 17 schools in Colbert and Lauderdale Counties.
The Helen Keller Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary is comprised of over 130 men and women who are dedicated to not only make the hospital a better place, but committed to making the overall Shoals Community better. As one of their numerous outreach projects, The Auxiliary sponsors the Louise Isbell Ashe Scholarship, which offers scholarships to high school seniors who are planning on entering the healthcare field.
