Betty Mitchell, 80, of Florence died peacefully Sunday, August 30, 2015 at home with her family.
Visitation will be Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at Elkins Funeral Home from 11 a.m. To 1 p.m. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. in the Chapel, with her nephew, Mike Hamner, officiating. Burial will be at Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens.
Betty was a local area realtor and developer and supported numerous charities and organizations, particularly the American Heart Association. She loved playing tennis, boating and traveling. Most of all, she enjoyed people and the great life she shared with her many friends and family members. Much of that life was spent near water on either Shoals Creek or the Gulf’s beaches, both of which she adored. She sought and found beauty in life and was a vibrant addition to the lives of all who knew her. Her beautiful smile will be missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Mitchell; two sons, Robert Stephen and Charles Gregory Mitchell; brother, Billy Ray Hamner; granddaughter, Alena Mitchell; and sister-in-law, Betty Murphy.
She is survived by two daughters, Susan Mitchell Beckett and Bridget Mitchell Tanner (Jeff); son, Brett Mitchell; sister, Mary Ellen Ritter; grandchildren, Wells Beckett (Kate), Katie Beckett Bunge (John), and Trip Tanner; nieces and nephews, Mike Hamner, Tony Hamner, Allison Hamner, Phillip Ritter, Gary Ritter, Mark Bo Ritter, Beverly Miller, and Montez Booher.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Tanner, Wells Beckett, Phillip Ritter, Mark Ritter, Gary Ritter, and Hunter Miller. Honorary pallbearer will be Trip Tanner.
The family would like to thank her special caretakers, Tena Scalion in Destin, FL, Ann Lenz and Belinda Murphy with Eldercare, and her nurses, Julie and Kim.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to NW Alabama Safeplace at www.nwalsafeplace.org.
