Funeral service for John H. Turney, 84, of Decatur will be Thursday, July 30, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Center Springs United Methodist Church with Rev. Steve Pilkington and Dr. Bobby Sharp officiating and Shelton Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Center Springs United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Turney, who died Sunday, July 26, 2015, at Decatur Morgan Hospital, was born June 10, 1931, in Morgan County to Leonard Turney and Lorene Couey Turney. He graduated from Cotaco High School and attended Auburn University prior to serving in the United States Air Force. He was a Korean War veteran. After military service, he returned to Morgan County. He was employed by Chemstrad, later Monsanto, for over 40 years. John completed his education at Athens College, earning a degree in chemistry. He was a devoted, active member of Center Springs United Methodist Church. John’s generosity, sense of humor, and honesty touched all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Elizabeth Turney; and one brother, Dan Turney.
Survivors include one son, Adrian E. Turney of Decatur; one sister, Gayle Townsend (Don) of Decatur; and many much loved nieces, nephews and cousins. John will also be greatly missed by the family of close friend, Dean Turney.
John’s family thanks Evelyn Cohn, Peggy Hill and Shawna Jones for the support, friendship and laughter they provided during his illness.
Pallbearers for John H. Turney will be Steve Bowen, Stanley Butler, Chuck Nolen, Howard Sullivan, Byron Turney and Royce Turney. Honorary pallbearer will be Tom Sharp.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Center Springs United Methodist Church, 4851 East Upper River Road, Somerville, AL 35670 or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942.
