FLORENCE-The Florence Police were on hand today, Tuesday, June 9 to honor Lieutenant Colonel Ed Yeilding with his very own speed limit on Cox Creek Parkway.

Here is how the Florence Police describe the ceremony and unveiling of the 2,200 speed limit sign:

“*New speed limit on Cox Creek Parkway* Not for real but we would like to recognize Lieutenant Colonel R. Edward “Ed” Yeilding for his dedication to our country. Mayor Haddock and Councilman Graham presented Yeilding with this custom speed limit sign today. The 2,200 MPH stands for the speed he was traveling when he set the record for the fastest speed recorded by an airplane. On March 6, 1990, Yeilding, Vida, and their Blackbird set an official coast-to-coast aircraft speed record of 67 minutes 54 seconds, cruising at mach 3.3, 2,190 mph, and reaching an altitude of 83,000 feet. That SR-71, tail #64-17972, is on display at the Smithsonian’s Udvar-Hazy Center, west of Washington, D.C.
Thank you for service Lieutenant Colonel Yeilding!!!”
