mikeSunday, 29 March, Michael (Mike) Massey bumped his last fist, rode his last ride, strummed his last chord and sweet-talked his last nurse. After a valiant week long battle, he conceded and shuffled off this mortal coil. He was a graduate of S.R. Butler High School class of 1983. Mike was an Airborne Military Policeman, which basically meant If he wasn’t harassed by his fellow MPs for being Airborne, he was harassed by his fellow airborne for being an MP. Both groups loved him because he was just that awesome. He was a member of the 287m Military Police Company, Berlin Brigade where he manned the famous Check Point Charlie between the American and Soviet sectors in the late 1980’s. Mike was an avid motorcyclist and wanted to be buried sitting upright on his bike…no such luck. He was a member of the US Paratrooper Motorcycle Association as well as the Patriot Guard Riders. He had a soft spot for underdogs…you could tell by his choice of football teams, University of Tennessee Volunteers and Pittsburgh Steelers. He was a big strong man, turned cabers and such, but would save a kitten in a tree, complete teddy bear and he’d hate his little sister telling the world this right now, But being the little sister I’m sticking my tongue out at him as I write this…and I know he’d be laughing. Mike was the son of the late LTC. (Ret.) Marvin H. Massey Jr, and Audrey (Derryberry) Massey of Huntsville, AL. Mike is survived by his children: Christopher Jones of Alabama, Kala (Shawn) Lamb of Ft. Bliss Texas, Caitlin Massey, Michael Howard Massey Jr., and Matthew Massey of Healdton, OK. He has three sisters: Melanie (Robert) Sherrow of Athens, AL, Mikala (Steve) Howard of Columbia, TN, and Merri-Beth Massey of Huntsville, AL. He has beloved nephews and a niece, Robert Sherrow, Bonnie Sherrow, Joseph (Jay) Howard, William (Will) Howard, and Bryan Gregory. Visitation will be Saturday at Berryhill Funeral Home in Huntsville, Alabama from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. followed by a Chapel memorial service following directly at 6:00 p.m. The family would like to thank all those that went above and beyond in the care of Mike, especially the exceptional staff at UAB Heart Transplant Unit and Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to UAB Hospital Reference: Heart Transplant Intensive Care Unit, 619 19th Street South, Birmingham, AL 35249-6943, Ref: West Pavillion P528.
