Yellow_MumMONTGOMERY-Yellow Mama is the nickname given to Alabama’s electric chair, which was used for executions from 1927–2002.

First installed at Kilby State Prison in Montgomery, Alabama, Yellow Mama acquired its yellow color when painted using highway-line paint from the adjacent State Highway Department lab.The chair was built by a British inmate in 1927 and was first used to execute Horace DeVauhan that same year.

On Wednesday, March 11 the Alabama House of Representatives approved a bill,  “Capital Punishment Preservation Act” , this bill would reverse the option of using lethal injections.  The bill was approved by a vote of 76-26.15833007-standard

This bill would allow the use of the electric chair to be the primary method of execution if lethal injection is either ruled unconstitutional or if the lethal injection drugs are unavailable for any reason.

In 2002 the sate legislature switched to lethal injection from the electric chair.  Although inmates can make their choice of which method they prefer.

The bill will now enter into the State Senate for approval.
