FLORENCE–If you thought you saw someone skiing the trails around Florence with a wooden rifle on his back you were right! His name is Kirby Best and he is training for the Winter World Masters Games that starts next week in Quebec City, Canada. 1,500 athletes from around the world are expected to participate this year.
The sport he will be participating in is the Biathlon, a combination of cross-country skiing and shooting. Athletes ski a series of loops that return to a central range where they will stop and shoot 5 shots 4 different times – twice standing and twice prone (lying down). They have to hit a target a little bigger than a quarter from 55 yards; each miss adds time to their ski time. Shortest time wins.
Kirby, who is known more for driving the 4-man Bobsled for Canada than the Biathlon, did ski for the Canadian National Ski team for many years.
