MaryNelle Smith Abney – Obituary

MaryNelle Smith Abney, age 97, died Saturday morning January 24, 2015 at Methodist Hospice Residence in Memphis.

Mrs. Abney was born December 28, 1917 in the Jacks Creek Community in Chester County to Robert Algie Smith and Jimmie Rachel Record Smith. She lived most of her life in Henderson, TN and in 1940 married Truett Ridgeway Abney, who preceded her in death. She is survived by one son, Truett Robert Abney, who grew up in Henderson, his wife Donna Aucoin Abney and grandchildren Allison Abney of Washington, DC and Bryan Abney of Memphis. She is also survived by her sister, Virginia Dare McAdams and brother, Neal Smith both of Henderson and one niece and three nephews.

She attended Freed Hardeman University, Union University and later Memphis State University.

She devoted much of her life to teaching and taught for 36 years in Chester County, at Enville, Deanburg, Jacks Creek and finally at East Chester Elementary where she taught 4th grade. She also worked at the U. S. Office of Price Administration processing ration books during World War II.

She was the organizing Regent of the Henderson Station Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and served in a variety of roles from 1976 until the time of her death. She was a life member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Henderson Church of Christ.

She was also a member of the Bon Tres social club of Henderson and former member of the Ingleside Book Club. She was a member of the ladies golf association at Woodland Hills and had a handicap of 20.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Chester County Library in Henderson or the Methodist Hospice Residence in Memphis.
