to doATHENS-Those Christmas to-do lists are not complete just yet.

Get out that list and add numbers 12-14 for these items:
No. 12 – Shop
No. 13 – Sip
No. 14 – Smile

All three can be done at the annual Spirit of Athens Sippin’ Cider event that is coming up on 12-13-14.

“We have the perfect date this year for your last minute shopping experience with 12-13-14 because that’s easy to remember,” said SOA Promotions

Committee Chair Holly Hollman. “You can shop for great deals, sip cider made by our merchants and vote for your favorite, and then smile while you watch your children roast marshmallows and make art crafts.”

From 5-8 p.m., participating merchants will have various event related activities from special deals to door prizes to children’s projects.

The merchants also will be vying for the golden colored Cider Cup given to the best cider recipe. Shoppers can get ballots and turn in ballots at any participating store to vote for their favorite cider concoction.

2“Winning the Cider Cup is a competitive part of this event for our merchants,” said SOA Director Trisha Black. “The ones who have won in the past keep the cup on display. Each one wants to have the best cider, and those of us who get to try all the delicious recipes enjoy the results of this competitive spirit.”

Downtown restaurants will be open, and the Our Little Kitchen food truck will have gumbo, jambalaya and fried pies. There will be a fire pit for roasting marshmallows on The Square. As shoppers are walking along the sidewalks, they will likely run into Santa and Dickens characters.

The Athens-Limestone Community Association plans to sell copies of Charlotte Fulton’s book, “Holding the Fort: A History of Trinity School in Athens, Alabama.” The book chronicles the Civil War site Fort Henderson which is also the site of the former all-black Trinity School, which closed amid integration.
