Alleged thieves were busy… Morgan County Sheriff reminded them that Crime Doesn’t Pay

auto 1MORGAN COUNTY – Sheriff Ana Franklin released information about a arrest involving several vehicles. Here’s what the release says:

“The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, Criminal Investigation Division (CID), recovered a Harley Davidson motorcycle, a Honda rancher 4-wheeler, and a Chevrolet 1500 pick up truck from one residence on Apple Grove Road, in Morgan County. These vehicles were stolen from Huntsville, Tennessee and Arab. One person was arrested in connection with the recovery of these items.

Criminal investigators also identified and arrested a man responsible for the burglary of a supermarket in Eva, Alabama and the theft of an atm from that store, also a 14 ft tandem axle trailer stolen from the Eva area was recovered in Cullman County and a suspect in that theft has been identified.

On September 29th, 2014 at 05:03 am, a burglar alarm sounded at Hoppers Foodland in Eva, Alabama. Deputies responded and found the owner on scene. Forced entry had been made into the store and the atm was missing. Investigator/Sgt Chad Smith responded. Utilizing security camera footage and working closely with Cullman County Sheriff’s auto 2investigators Lt. Doug Duke and investigator Joey Clark, a suspect was identified and questioned. On Oct 24th, 2014 Ricardo Alberto Ortiz, 40, of Brasher’s Chapel Road, Albertville, Marshall County, admitted to the burglary and theft. He is currently incarcerated in Cullman County, a warrant for his arrest has been issued, and a hold placed on Mr. Ortiz for Morgan County. He is facing charges of burglary In Morgan County, and other charges are pending.

On Oct 20th, 2014, Deputy Terry “Turk” Jones received information that there were several stolen vehicles at a residence on apple grove road. He informed investigator/Sgt Chad Smith. Smith and Jones proceeded to 2346 Apple Grove Road, Somerville in Morgan County and observed a Harley Davidson motorcycle parked at the house. A check of the license tag showed it to be a switched tag. Inv/Sgt Smith obtained a search warrant for the residence and its Curtilage. On service of this warrant, Morgan County Sheriff’s Office personnel recovered a 1993 Harley Davidson motorcycle stolen from Huntsville, a 2004 Honda rancher stolen from Lincoln County, Tennessee, a 1989 Chevrolet 1500 pick up truck stolen from Arab, along with a 7’ x 12’ trailer, which was attached to the truck. The investigators also saw evidence of drug use/possession and notified the special agents of the Morgan County drug task force, who responded. They obtained their own search warrant and recovered evidence of drug possession and manufacturing. Warrants were obtained by both units for Jason Marlow Haithcock, 40, of 2346 apple grove road, Somerville. He was arrested on Oct 27th, 2014 and charged with 3 counts of receiving stolen property 1st degree, one count of possession of a synthetic controlled substance, and one count of manufacturing, his bond totaling $42,500. He was also charged with a parole violation, for which there is no bond.

On Oct 23rd the theft of a 14 foot tandem axle trailer was reported stolen from a hwy 55 east address in Eva, Alabama. The theft had occurred in late September, but wasn’t reported at that time. The owner of the trailer spotted what he believed to be his property at a cullman county address. He then reported this to the sheriff’s office, and Inv/Sgt Chad Smith was notified. Inv/Sgt Smith located the trailer and confirmed it did in fact belong to the reporting person. It was impounded and returned to the owner. A suspect in this theft has been identified and the investigation is on-going.”
