MaryOn the afternoon of October 21, Mary Ruth “Memaw” Hafner went to live in eternity. She passed quietly with her husband of 60 years at her side. Mary was 95 years young.
Mary Ruth Hafner was born on April 9, 1919 in Berry, Alabama and was the second child of Jesse and Lelia Mae Davis.

Mary and her husband Alex moved to Huntsville in 1961 where he worked at NASA and Mary worked at Chrysler as a quality control inspector.

Mary and Alex were long time members at Sherwood Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. They very much enjoyed Gospel music and would travel often to Gospel singings and dinners on the ground. Every chance they got, they would go camping, and in later years would travel in their motor home all across the country. On most of those trips, they would take at least one of their four grandchildren because they loved traveling in the motor home with Memaw and Granddaddy.

In the last several years, Mary and Alex enjoyed the fellowship and friendship with several of their fellow RVers and would take small trips with their travel club, which she enjoyed very much. They enjoyed eating out, playing card games and dominoes.

Mary was preceded in death by her older brother, Lee Davis, and her oldest son, Alex Hafner, Jr.

Mary is survived by her husband, Alex Hafner, who has always been by her side; her loving son, James “Jay” Hafner; and daughter-in-law, Diane; four granddaughters, Crystal Marie Hafner, Jessica Lee Podschweit, Leslie Ann Cutler and Anna Kaitlin Hafner; six great-grandchildren, Summer, Kiah, Blake, Tessa, Emily and Damian; and her niece, Charlotte Dutton of Birmingham, who had been a blessing to her “Aunt Ruth” for many years.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Sherwood Baptist Church, 6600 Old Madison Pike in Huntsville. Burial will be in Valhalla Memory Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sherwood Baptist Church.

Mary, who we all lovingly called “Memaw”, always looked forward and never complained about what life brought her way. We loved her laughter and sense of humor. We will miss her so much but the wonderful memories will forever be in our hearts.
