animalshelterFLORENCE-A message from Florence Police Chief Ron Tyler concerning the Florence/Lauderdale Animal Shelter. Here is the statement from Chief Tyler:

Important Animal Control Update:
“Unfortunately, earlier today a dog at the Florence/Lauderdale Animal Shelter showed very strong indicators of having distemper. Distemper is a very contagious and generally fatal disease. As a result, I discussed the matter with the shelter supervisor and instructed him to euthanize that animal and eight (8) other animals that had close, prolonged contact with the dog. It is unfortunate that this has occurred, but it is essential to prevent the further spread of disease and to protect the other animals at the shelter. For the remainder of the week, we will be greatly limiting the intake of additional animals and will be very limited and extra cautious in sending any further animals out of the shelter until we have done all we can to disinfect and monitor the remaining animals. As a public shelter we are rightfully required to take in all sick and injured animals. Often times these diseases do not show up immediately and are not always readily recognizable. However, one of the harsh realities of a public shelter is that sick animals do come in and it is the best decision to put an animal, or group of animals to sleep in order to prevent the further spread of disease. This decision was made in the interest of public health and safety. Questions or comments can be directed to me, Chief Ron Tyler, at rtyler@florenceal.org. I continue to urge you to spay or neuter your pet to reduce the number of unwanted animals.”
