stillEUFAULA-Agents of the Alabama Alcohol Beverage Control Board recently located and demolished an illegal moonshine operation near the Midway Community in Bullock County. On March 7, 2014, agents entered a wooded area between Union Springs and Eufaula and found a 15-barrel working still and 25 gallons of moonshine packaged for transport.

The agents are part of the ABC Board’s Moonshine Task Force that investigates tips, develops leads, and are skilled in tracking and following trails that are often associated with this type of illegal operation. While no arrests have been made, agents are aware of several individuals known to cook moonshine in the area. Also, efforts are underway to locate the property owner.

After finding the still, agents discovered approximately 25 gallons of moonshine, packaged in a variety of plastic containers, moonshinecommonly used to hold gasoline, cooking oil and other liquids. It was determined that the still had been operational within 3 days of the raid and was in “preparation mode” to run again within the week. “Preparation mode” means the mash is being prepared to ferment, before being poured into the cooker to make the finished product. A 15-barrel still is considered average size, especially for that particular area, although prior operations have recovered up to 50 barrels.

Anyone with any information about this still or any other illegal activity is encouraged to call the complaint/tip line at 1-800-327-7341.
