KALB 1ATHENS-Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful, in cooperation with TVA, will host a cleanup of Limestone County’s Elk River Canoe & Kayak Trail on Saturday, March 8.  This will be the third event of this type hosted by KALB.

KALB hopes to have an army of volunteers scouring the Elk River and surrounding land areas searching for trash and debris.

“There are areas along this trail that are marred by dumping, careless littering, and graffiti,” said Lynne Hart, Executive Coordinator lynn hartof KALB.  “This area is on the National Trail Registry and as a community we should take pride in this beautiful treasure.”

KALB is seeking interested individuals and groups that would like to work with them and TVA to clean up this beautiful river which provides the water we drink, recreation, and beauty.  Trash bags, gloves, bottled water, and lunch will be provided to all who volunteer.  KALB appreciates the Athens-Limestone County Tourism Association for sponsoring lunch.

Thanks to a generous sponsorship provided by TVA, KALB is able to offer cash prizes as an incentive to entice groups to participate.  This is a great opportunity for clubs and school groups to gain community service hours and possibly win a nice cash prize!

Most of the litter found in and around the river did not originate there.  Nearly 90% of the litter comes from inland.  Carelessly handled trash is carried by wind, rain, and animals.  It easily washes into ditches and streams and can find its way to the river.  Dump sites occur when irresponsible people deliberately bring their trash to the river and leave it for someone else to clean up.

The Elk River belongs to all of us.  Let’s work together to take care of it.
