ATHENS FEATUREDATHENS-Start thinking of spring by attending this weekend’s Home and Garden Show, and then get in the Mardi Gras spirit by putting on your beads and joining us for our downtown event. There’s lots to do in Athens…

Here are a few upcoming events in the next couple of months.

Saturday, March 1, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, March 2, 12-4 p.m., Limestone County Event Center

Sponsored by the Greater Limestone County Chamber of Commerce. No admission. Demonstrations, children’s activities and door prizes. Get the information you need to get your home, yard and garden ready for spring.

Mardi Gras Parade

Tuesday, March 4, 6:30 p.m., Marion Street in downtown Athens

This year’s theme is “Steam Punk Circus.” Bring the kids at 5:30 p.m. to make beads. Sponsored by Athens State University’s Special Workshop in Sculpture Class. These students, nicknamed Artheads, will be in costume with sculpted heads. The Lion’s Club will provide rides on its Kids Train. The parade and marching is open to the public.

March 6, 7, 8 at 7 p.m., Athens Senior Center

Cost is $35 and includes a catered meal. This variety show encourages local talent to act crazy for a cause and raise funds to support senior programs through the Athens-Limestone Foundation for Aging. This year’s theme is “Home Sweet Home.” Tickets are available at the Athens Senior Center  from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Mondays from 5-8 p.m. For more information, call 256-233-6412.

Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful 3rd annual River Cleanup

Saturday, March 8, at 8 a.m., Elk River

Volunteers with boats are needed to help remove debris and trash from the river and its banks. Fort Hampton Outfitters is providing some kayaks and possibly canoes for volunteers without boats. Call 256-233-8728 to volunteer. Last March, over 40 volunteers of all ages worked to remove nearly 2.5 tons of trash from the water and adjacent land.

Tuesday, March 11, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Limestone County DHR parking lot, 1107 W. Market St.

You can schedule an appointment online at redcrossblood.org or call Jennifer White at 256-216-6411. DHR hopes to get 18 pints for the Red Cross.

City of Athens Relay for Life Swamp John’s Supper

Tuesday, March 11, from 4-7 p.m., Athens Senior Center

Tickets are $10 for a shrimp, chicken or fish plate or combo plate which includes sides and tea. We had hundreds turn out last year to support us. If you would like tickets for you and your family, please see Holly. Proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society and local cancer patients.

Hosted by the City of Athens Relay for Life Team. Local celebrities like the mayor, sheriff, councilmen and other will serve to earn tips for the American Cancer Society.

Saturday, April 26, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., downtown Athens

Lou Santiago of Car Fix, Team Hammer and McCormick Racing will attend. Open to all speciality vehicles and motorcycles. Public can view for free. Call Tom Schuman at 256-457-9179.
