Retired Lt. Colonel Arthur Benedict Charles DeLisle, 93, of Huntsville passed away peacefully on February 1, 2014. Retired Lieutenant Colonel Arthur B C. DeLisle was born in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, to Peter and Edith DeLisle. During World War II, he was stationed in Tinian, an island in the Marinas Island group in the Western Pacific. Art piloted B- 29’s as they flew into the Tsuraga Straits, near Japan. His last combat flight was to Tokyo, Japan to fly aerial cover for the Japanese surrender ceremonies being conducted aboard the battleship USS Missouri on September 2, 1945. He then went on to serve over twenty-five years in the United States Air Force. He retired from the Air Force in 1965, and then worked for IBM in the Federal Systems Division as an engineer developing computer software for the Saturn 1B rocket. Art later worked for Teledyne Brown Engineering, developing guidance software for the Patriot Missile Program.
After retiring from Teledyne Brown, Art improved his golf game, exercised, and spent time with his family. He will be remembered by his family and friends for his chivalrous nature, strong faith, classy style and thoughtful conversation. Perhaps most of all, he will be missed because they just don’t make men like him anymore. He was a gentleman through and through.
Survivors include his daughter Paula DeLisle and son-in-law Steve Lazar, of Hong Kong; his son, Dr. Gregg DeLisle and daughter-in-law, Donna of Huntsville, his grandchildren Dr. Matthew DeLisle and his wife Dr. Jessica DeLisle of Columbia, Tennessee, Sara Beth DeLisle of Birmingham, Alabama, Allison DeLisle of Nashville, Tennessee, Laura Marie Lazar of New York City, New York, and Justin Lazar of Hong Kong; and his great-grandchildren, Wilder and Rivers DeLisle of Columbia, Tennessee.
Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church with the funeral service to follow at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Inc.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Redstone Village and Dr. Don Evans for the care and love they consistently provided.
