Melborn Elswade “Wade” Wharton – Obituary

wadeMr. Melborn Elswade “Wade” Wharton passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2014, in Huntsville, AL. Arrangements are incomplete.

Born December 23, 1937 in Oak Ridge, TN, to Jasper Stephens and Jean Marie Pickens Wharton, he was an artist who worked with metal and wood. He grew up attending school in the Mt. Vinson area and graduated from high school in Tyranza, AR in 1955. He lived in Huntsville for over 45 years and worked for NASA for 10 years. He also served in the US Army.

He is survived by a daughter, Chelly Flaherty of Birmingham; 3 sisters, Bettie Jordan and her husband Junior of Toone, Susan Webster and her husband Junior of Bolivar, Nancy Gray of Lancaster, TX; 2 brothers Tommy Wharton and his wife Mary Ann of Nacogdoches, TX and Terry Wharton and his wife Mary of Toone; 3 step-sisters, Nancy Dillard, Bertha Vaughan and Margaret Howell of Bolivar and a stepbrother David Sipes of Bolivar; and by 2 grandchildren.

The family requests memorials be made to Huntsville Botanical Gardens.

Our entire family is so sad about this horrific end to this wonderful man. We never met him but have greatly enjoyed his art, the fern glade he helped start, and the Botanical Garden in general. May God grant your family peace and comfort in this very troubling time.
