Athens UtilitiesATHENS-Athens Utilities is requesting that our customers reduce all non-essential power consumption outside of heating and basic lighting. This will help reduce the load on the system preventing additional outages. At this time we have scattered outages in Limestone County and about 4,000 customers out of power in the Clements area. Those customers should receive power within the hour.
The Clements substation went down when an insulator malfunctioned because of so much current running through the substation. Athens Utilities General Manager Gary Scroggins said the system set another record peak for demand at around 320 megawatts. One megawatt can power about 200 homes in Limestone County.
In addition, the sprinkler system at Fire Station No. 1 on Washington Street ruptured around 3 a.m. today, flooding the station. The bays are operational but the living quarters and office area are not usable. Athens Fire and Rescue is getting in touch with Limestone County EMA and other agencies to see if there is a mobile unit available for use at the Station No. 1 site.
