MUSCLE SHOALS – A “home away from home” for many senior citizens in Muscle Shoals that was damaged by fire will receive energy efficiency upgrades with the help of a $100,000 grant from The State Of Alabama. While insurance is paying for structural repairs, the grant will enable the city of Muscle Shoals to incorporate energy-efficient features in the renovated Muscle Shoals Senior Center. The building, which hosts dozens of senior activities per week, was severely damaged by an accidental fire in April. The upgrades include extra insulation in the walls and attic, installation of insulated glass windows and front doors and more efficient heating and air conditioning units. The center’s kitchen will be outfitted with Energy Star-rated appliances, which are highly efficient and save hundreds of dollars in energy costs during the life of the appliances. The project also includes the installation of occupancy sensors that automatically turn lights off when areas of the building are unoccupied. The Senior Center offers meals and weekly activities for older residents including games, exercise classes and educational programs. The activities are being held in the city’s recreation center while the building is being refurbished.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from the state oil overcharge fund which is supported with money awarded to Alabama as restitution from oil companies for violations of federal price controls.
