FLORENCE – Lauderdale County Circuit Judge, Gil Self asked the Defendant if he understood that there would be no parole, no probation if he plead guilty. In cases like this 20 years can seem like a lifetime for a man convicted of raping a 7 year old.

James Robert Casey, 57 years old, answered “Yes, Sir.” Judge Self asked Casey if he was ready to plead ‘Not Guilty’ in this case. Casey replied again, “Yes, Sir.” With that, Casey was sentenced to 20 years for repeatedly raping a child. The guilty plea of sexually abusing a child was entered into the record just before a jury was about to begin hearing evidence in the case.

He was arrested in April 2011 after the girl told to her mother about the assaults, which had happened several months earlier. Casey was originally facing charges on first degree sexual abuse and first degree sexual abuse of a child under 12. He could have received life in prison, if convicted on all of the original charges.
