Tennessee Valley Historical SocietySHEFFIELD – The Tennessee Valley Historical Society will hold its Summer Quarterly Meeting on Sunday, 28 July 2013 at 2:30 p.m. at the Sheffield Public Library Conference Room, located at 316 North Montgomery Avenue, Sheffield, AL

Guest speaker Charles Enloe Moore will explore Hernando de Soto’s southeast and subsequent westward journey in his quest to fulfill three objectives: to find a route to the Pacific Ocean (including movement through the Shoals); Christianize American Indians, and to find gold.

Charles Moore – Discusses Desoto’s travels including North Alabama

Mr. Moore was born and raised in Florence, Alabama. He attended the University of North Alabama and Auburn University and thereafter spent most of his career as an investment broker, branch manager and vice president with A.G. Edwards.

While serving on the Florence Historical board, he acted as project officer for the Indian Mound and Museum in Florence for twenty-three years. He was later appointed City Archaeologist. Mr. Moore was honored as Archaeologist of the Year in 1974 by the Alabama Archaeological Society and in 2004 he was named “Citizen of the Year by the Shoals Chamber of Commerce.” He is author of “Reflections of Turtle Point” published in 2005 and “Come Tell Me How You Lived: Native American History of the Tennessee Valley.”

The meeting is free to the public and all are invited to attend.

Refreshments will be served at the meeting’s conclusion.
